We’re back with our recap of monthly updates and announcements from AWS. AWS announced a massive number of updates to their services in March, so we’ll run down some highlights to help you make sense of this. Some themes in the March releases:
expanding service integrations and improved observability, such as improved S3 Object Lambda tooling in CloudFront,
additional network resources supported in VPC Reachability Analyzer, and
Glue providing continuous logging in AWS Glue Job monitoring.
AWS also expanded its global footprint in March by adding a new edge location in Peru to its network. Additionally, Direct Connect got an expansion with access points added in Mumbai, India; Muscat, Oman; Auckland, New Zealand; and Hamburg, Germany.

Services Specifics:
Let’s analyze the updates to services and examine the details of the service updates that were released this month. The following are the top 5 services that received updates in March 2023:
Amazon EC2: 9
Amazon RDS: 7
Amazon Connect: 6
AWS Glue: 5
Amazon Kendra: 5
Amazon released or moved several services to General Availability in March.
Amazon DataZone (Preview): A new data management service to allow for data sharing between producers and consumers across organizations. This preview adds an additional data-sharing approach to the toolkit.
Amazon VPC Lattice: This service simplifies service-to-service communications. This includes creating network connectivity across accounts and VPCs.
AWS re:Post: AWS Knowledge Center articles are being migrated to the AWS re:Post solution, allowing AWS builders to access comprehensive AWS knowledge better.
AWS Application Composer: This service provides a drag-and-drop visual approach to architecting, configuring, and building serverless applications utilizing several AWS services.

Notable Service Updates:
When reviewing the March updates, the following items stood out to us as notable and worth calling out based on their potential to impact a broad base of users and get lost in the large number of updates.
Amazon Simple Email Service has added delivery and engagement graphs. This functionality, available in the Virtual Deliverability Manager, gives a time series view of critical metrics such as delivery, complaint rate, and message volume. This will simplify the monitoring of this process.
AWS Network Firewall added the ability to inspect TLS connections, which allows the firewall to decrypt traffic in transit, apply firewall rules, and then re-encrypt the traffic to deliver it to the destination. This greatly expands the areas where connection security can be applied.
AWS VPN adds support for tunnel visibility and control when tunnel maintenance updates occur. This allows for better stability and management of VPN site-to-site tunnels.
The AWS Well-Architected Tool has added consolidated reporting and search functionality to allow customers to more easily see themes in the risks identified during a Well-Architected Framework review.
AWS Chatbot, which provides prebuilt chat ops support for customers’ AWS accounts, now supports searching for AWS resources and documentation. Using natural language queries, the Chatbot can give feedback to customers about the resources in their AWS accounts and references to documentation supporting those resources.
Application Load Balancers in AWS now support the TLS 1.3 cipher set. This will improve the security of these resources and allow for better compliance with standards such as PCI/DSS.
You can now run Windows 11 on Amazon Workspaces by Bringing Your Own License (BYOL). This allows companies that have adopted Windows 11 to provide a consistent experience between on-premise and cloud-based desktop environments.
Amazon Lightsail has been extended to have a Research specific offering. These instances come with the ability to work in analytical applications such as Scilab, RStudio, and Jupyter.
Amazon S3 Multi-Region Access Points can now support replicated data across regions and AWS accounts. This allows for increased resiliency structure through both multi-region and multi-account redundancy for customers with that need.
Conclusions:
March saw a bumper crop of changes and announcements from AWS, including:
Expansion of their Direct Connect access footprint,
Several changes focused on monitoring and working with AWS services, and
Changes focused on improving the developer experience.
