February 2023 Amazon Web Services Announcements

Welcome to the second installment of our recap of monthly updates and announcements from AWS. AWS released even more changes and updates in February, despite being a shorter month than January. In addition, we noticed a theme in security, fraud detection, and management, including updates to AWS WAF, AWS Fraud Detector, AWS Incident Detection and Response, and AWS Detective.

Direct Connect added two new network entry points, one in the US and one in India. Direct Connect allows for high-speed internal network access to AWS services. Feature and functionality updates to services were the majority of the changes this month, and there was less regional expansion of services than we saw in January.

February Numbers:

Let’s start with some high-level numbers around updates that occurred in February.

  • Total Updates: 107

  • Total Services With Feature Updates: 65

  • Average Daily Updates: 6

  • Average Updates Per Service: 2

  • Regional Service Expansions: 57

Services Specifics:

Let’s look at what services were updated and some details of what kind of service updates were released this month. The top 5 services with updates in February 2023 are as follows:

  • Amazon RDS: 10

  • Amazon EC2: 7

  • Amazon CloudWatch: 5

  • AWS App Runner: 4

  • AWS Elemental: 4

The following services received updates that make them applicable in compliance environments.

  • Amazon EMR Serverless now supports HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC, and PCI DSS workloads.

One new service was released in preview during February.

  • AWS Telco Network Builder - This service allows communications service providers to automate the deployment and management of large-scale and high-count compute, storage, and networking component networks on AWS

The following graph shows a count of updates per service during February.

Notable Service Updates:

When reviewing the February updates, the following items stood out to us as notable and worth calling out separately, as they may impact a broad base of users or get lost in the large number of updates.

  • AWS VPC increases NAT Gateway’s capacity to support concurrent connections to a unique destination, which improves the NAT gateway’s ability to support high-volume outbound networks for workloads that depend heavily on external resources. The new limit is 440,000 concurrent connections per external destination.

  • AWS CloudFormation announces a spotlight for the latest news on CloudFormation features, blogs, and workshops. The spotlight is a new CloudFormation console tab consolidating these resources for filterable access.

  • AWS Control Tower provides updates to access logging and exceptions to more global services for Region Deny. This update removes unnecessary access logging and extends the global services exempt from the Control Tower Region Deny functionality.

  • Amazon SNS now supports AWS X-Ray active tracing to visualize, analyze, and debug application performance. AWS X-Ray allows for increased transparency and visibility into the components of distributed systems involved in a transaction. Adding SNS to active tracing increases the coverage available for workloads.

  • AWS Snow Family now supports Amazon EKS Anywhere. This feature addition increases the flexibility for AWS Snow Family to do workloads in on-premise and other environments outside of the cloud. This can be particularly useful for customers considering workload migration from on-premise data centers.

  • Amazon RDS Database Activity Streams now supports Amazon RDS for SQL Server. Database activity streams allow activity in the database to trigger events via Amazon Kinesis Data Streams.

  • Amazon Detective launches interactive workshop for investigating potential security issues. This new feature allows customers to practice using Amazon Detective in a simulated workshop environment working through several tutorials. This provides experience with Detective outside of the critical nature of a security incident.

  • Amazon CloudWatch Internet Monitor is now generally available. This addition to CloudWatch allows monitoring of Internet availability, traffic patterns, and health events across cities and geographies, supporting the customer’s workload.

  • AWS Lambda now supports Amazon DocumentDB change streams as an event source. Similar to the addition of Database Activity Streams, this feature allows for events to be triggered by changes in Amazon DocumentDB, allowing for creating orchestrations and workloads initiated by data flowing in an application.

Conclusions:

February was another busy month for AWS features. This month saw several exciting features and functionality, from increasing the ability to trigger events from databases to improving security features and functionality. Let us know if we can help you use these features or other AWS services to enable, speed up, or advance your business. The complete announcement list is included below for anyone looking at specific update headlines for a service.
